Lessons learned.

Now that I'm a real corporate go-getter, I'm learning valuable lessons. I will pass my newest enlightenment on to you.

When you have your new corporate identification card on one of those elastic "yo-yo" cords that make it easy to hang it from your belt so you simply extend pass and it slides back into place........ Make sure when you go to use the bathroom that you don't accidentally step on your card whilst yanking up your trousers.

Because your card, which is in a nice, heavy, weapon-like carrying case, will fly up and hit you in the face.

Just a little tip, from me to you. Happy friday...

uh oh

think i had too much tea on ice today... a's snoring in my ear and i'm
wiiiiiiiiiiiiide awake. make sure to NOT remind me about this tomorrow
when i complain how tired i am and just point me towards the ice
machine... m'kay?

Oh. My. Gosh.

This may not butter your biscuit as it does mine.. Especially if you are not an expat stuck in a country that doesn't believe in cold beverages like my homeland.... BUT!

I have just made a profound and life changing discovery .... The kitchen on my floor has an ICE MACHINE! Do you realise what this means!?! I can self brew iced tea! Ohholymotherofmoses today is a good day!

I am so tired.. I feel like I've been drugged or beaten up or something. So sluggish while the rest of the corporate world is cruising on double time.

Former new car weird feelings are gone now.... I really like it and it's so darn comfortable! I've driven it once in the two weeks we've had it and man oh man, is it wide.

In the evenings, andrew and mary catherine have been picking me up at the train station.. I get there before them, which is great because I get to read a bit and unwind. When they come wheeling up in our new car which already resembles the popemoobile, mary catherine waves like royalty from her new spot in the middle of the backseat. Andrew, who has his bluetooth headset on, looks like the secret service driver! Makes me giggle every time.

morning to one and all. the sun is shining in london and i've a fantastic starbucks tropical citrus frap under my belt. yes - spring has sprung!

so far i am really digging my morning commute. thanks to my ipod shuffle my whopping 8 minute train ride is a total doddle. once i get off the DLR, i tend to wander to work, taking the time to look in shop windows and watch people. i've been doing LOTS of people watching. have snapped a few pictures that i'll try and post this evening.

what else can i tell you? hmm. i am feeling totally like i'm not getting to spend enough time with mary catherine. i think, however, that is another post for another day. possibly a grey, rainy day diatribe? nothing really i can do about it at the moment, so i think i sort of have to accept my fate as a mother who works.

not keen on it - but feeling a bit defeatist on that one. more later.

slipping slowly into nerd nirvana.. have now set up my life so i can take pics with my mobile and send them to my site. is anything cooler than that at this very moment? i think not.

pic is from a great show we saw at the half moon children's theatre.. lottie, mary catherine and olivia.

Rainy days and mondays...

So .. Bright and early day one, week two.. I've just spilled a giant glass of water all over my desk, chair and floor.

I've cleaned it up, but when I sit in my chair, the wet spot under me loks like I've had "an unfortunate accident" in the work place. Nice one.

did i tell you that we finally got our new car? i'll be happier once we've gotten rid of the old one, but we are really happy (well, thus far) with the multipla. sure, it looks funny but it's HUGE on the inside and seems very functional. i haven't counted the cupholders yet, but there seem to be at least 10 that i can think of. that's crazy.

more new pictures can be seen here. including ones of mary catherine going crazy picking flowers in our front garden and a few left overs from our american trip. (my favourite? the very macro shot of lichen. yes i am a dork.)

this week i'm going to take my camera with me to the area where i now work. should be able to get a lot of cool things. we shall see.

off to week two at the new job tomorrow morning. actually have to be awake in about 5.5 hours, so should probably get to bed. will honestly try and think of something incredibly interesting to talk about for next post. honest. don't think i haven't noticed that lately no one comments other than my mother. sometimes i think she's just being nice so i don't have to feel like lizzie no-mates!

my child thinks that dire straits' 'walk of life' is the most groovinest tune ever. that is so cool.

9 more hours and i will have made it through my first week. if i drank i'd totally slop down on my sofa with a beer tonight.

mary catherine is really out of sorts. she's developed what seems to be a cold and a bad attitude all in the same go. she woke at 1:22 last night, pretty bunged up and got into bed with us. she then flipped and flopped and flipped again until she asked to go back to her cot around 415. we've been up since then.

she says her tummy hurts - and that stumped me. colds/flu, fever, aches and pains i've gotten down pretty solid, but tummy ache? i lay awake while she was with andrew in the living room (where she sent him to sleep but then immediately wanted him to come back) trying to figure out what to do. in the end, i did nothing and she seems to be pretty fine.

although she's really mean at the moment. i'm chalking it up to not feeling well, but if she hits me one more time. i'll... i'll... you get the idea. more later.

Better

I promise life at ed.c won't always be so dire and dull, darlings! It's just that I am swimming like a headless chameleon at the moment... Coming here has been a big change to my work/life balance and I am sure it'll calm down once my feet are firmly on the carpet, so to speak.

Nothing much to report, really. We got our new car yesterday and while I think its great, I've still yet to drive it and am just not that excited about it. Bottom line is that I am just really tired....

More later :)

Had to happen sometime!

Am having my first "one of those days".... I knew it was going to be like this from the moment I woke up, how weird is that?

total quickie
just a fast one before i jump in the shower and get today started... (so this is what 530am looks like!) off i go for day two at new job. i'm sorry that it seems like it's going to detract from my precious blogging time, but i'm sure i'll get better with work/life balance. after all, it's a big new thing for me - so many thanks for your patience. you know us.. we here at ed.com aim to please.

i'm totally staring at my wardrobe.. what to wear.. what to wear. maybe i'll be enlightened in the shower. more by berry later, hopefully.

Well 1st day on new job went very well... Totally different environment, but am looking forward to getting in and getting to work.

Hope you all made it through the last post without hitting the bottle or considering anti-depressants.... Sorry about that. Leaving was hard, but compared to my flip out it wasn't so bad. MC was a rock star on the flights, thank goodness..

More later.

tomorrow we fly home. on many levels i'm ready to get back to our house, space and usual hum drum comfort zone. of course, there are always the levels that i consistently mention the night before the day we leave - i'm sad to be going, that's a given.

not to bore you completely, but this time i feel absolutely sick to my stomach about going. i look at our luggage and it's like i can't breathe properly. i want to go into the next room and wake mary catherine up, because it feels like if i stay awake tomorrow won't come and we won't have to be the people who hurt the feelings of many.

i doubt most people understand what it's like to tear your own family apart and the burden of making people you care deeply about sad. how difficult it is to hear their friends begin to comfort them even before you've left. right in front of you. it's gut wrenching.

i am not sure what the solution is or how much longer i can bear to put on a brave face about how great it is that we are so lucky to see each other all the time .. blah de blah. it's all smoke and mirrors, actually. it's never gotten easier to leave, it hurts like burning to try not to cry and it strains me to put on the proverbial brave face.

of course, my mother will read this and in her comments she will tell you that she's sad but happy that i am happy... man, i hate this. anyway - more from the uk in about 24-36 hours.

i have no idea why i'm awake. it's super early and i really should be sleeping. i think it's a combination of the eight million mosquito bites on my ankle that are driving me absolutely bananas or well.. hmm.. i dunno. guess it's the mozzie bites.

on a positive note, since i'm up before the crack of dawn i've used my time wisely and gotten the pictures from our holiday thus far loaded on flickr for your enjoyment. click here.

so let's see.. today we're going to lunch at mom's school again and wal mart, old navy and a shoe place. i'm on the hunt for a new pair of black work shoes. aren't you glad to know the boring and mundane facts about my footwear? see - this is what you get when you hang with me before the sun rises. lucky, huh?

what to write.... what to write..
while we were away we purchased mary catherine's summer wardrobe courtesy of a very generous grant from violet's closet and my mother's friend janet. sometimes the kindness of others floors me. we were able to get so much by shopping around and bargain hunting.

not that much to report, really. we've been hanging out at my parents' house and going to school with my mom. mary catherine sat with a group of 5-6 year olds today and listened to a story. she was so well behaved and not afraid of the bigger children. i was impressed.

one note about today's picture. i believe this indian's name was flying eagle and he was really, really dumb. kept going on about his modern mocassins (reebok sneakers) and wal mart. it was a little more than strange, but very entertaining. his outfit wasn't made of feathers as you can see - but neon nylon strips and he wore a full spandex suit under it. it was really hokey and a lot of fun to watch. at the end of his fancy dance, he wowed us all with a full split and it sorta looked like he was going to be a bit sore afterwards..

last night we went to chuck e cheese for grumpa's 61st birthday party. later i'll tell you all about how my child is a skeeball wizard! happy birthday grumpa!

know what's weird? when people you know in 'real life' verbally spank you for not blogging. i mean, i don't really mind it - but sometimes i just want to say, 'um, you're spending 24 hours a day with me, what part of my life aren't you catching?' ... but anyway.

i totally went to mr wong's house of beauty and got 'done' today. mani/pedi and an eyebrow wax - totally fab and i'm not even that red and puffy from the scary little woman who ripped the innocent hairs from my furrowed, yet strangely relaxed, brow. dahling, i look mahvelous.

tomorrow we head out to gatlinburg, tennessee via cherokee, north carolina. both towns are incredibly cheesy and OH SO MUCH fun.

we'll stop in cherokee long enough to cruise some gift shops and have mcd's picture taken with a 'real' indian. seriously, it's so tacky it's fun. we'll then head on to the gatlinburg/pigeon forge area, where gift shops are so desperate for your business that they send out coupons to your hotel room luring you to their establishments with the promise of a 'free bag of gold rocks' or a 'precious gemstone id chart'. all that just for stopping by. SO tacky. SO fun. i'm very excited. will blog from the road via the berry.. hiya watha and here we go!

today's experience at the DMV wasn't that bad. i was pleasantly surprised as it took only about 45 minutes. previous experiences with them have taken hours. my new license photo is wretched. pity.

also hit the favourite thrift store, picking up mary catherine a cool super girl tee shirt and gen-yoo-ine levi's jean jacket (that looks like it's seen lots of rock and roll action) as well as a few other random tee shirts for the grand total of $12. nice.

man i love shopping. we're having a relaxing time here - i know if we lived here it wouldn't be like being on holiday all the time, but it's nice to think about.

the call of the apple store and a new powerbook looms large on my horizon. give me strength.

we've landed in america and it's great to be here... mary catherine was really, really good on the plane. i was really proud to be her mom. even when she told the flight attendants, 'i have lips!' on the way off the plane. i dunno where she gets it!

i'm going to do battle with the georgia DMV this morning ... gotta renew my driver's license. fun.

so i've got about an hour and a half before a.) i leave my job and b.) i say goodbye to the fabulous 20" imac i use here.  if you'd asked me a month ago, i'd say b was harder than a... but since i've sorta let my hair down and stopped worrying about the small things, a's getting pretty damn difficult. and then there's leaving all my friends here.

i mean, i know we've all said we'll keep in touch. but who ever does? hell, gibson's even already found someone else to instant message. he and i.... we're so over.

more later.. if i can stand it.
