Oooh - look at this - A Jar Of Whimsies! How fabulous would this be for the four year old in your life who likes little curious objects!

Not too sure how appropriate/child safe they'd be for unsupervised play.. but man, I think the idea is really fun. Reminds me of the grab bag I made for Mary Catherine when she was a baby of every day items for her to touch and play with.

From One Good Bumblebee : "The 30-ounce plastic jars are packed with over 100 items including glass glitter imported from Germany, vintage cotten spun mushrooms, gold foil leaves, viles, millinery supplies, vintage beads, vintage costume jewelry, vintage clothespins, typewriter keys, ingle bells, vintage marbles, wooden spools, sugared fruits, antique skeleton keys, vintage game pieces, watch parts, foil dresdens, miniature toys, vintage swizzle sticks, charms and so much more."

Although I have to say, from the pictures, I can tell you that here in the UK, we still use those 'vintage' keys and clothespegs!

Mary Catherine is, thankfully, over her ear infection. I'm so glad that we didn't rush to the doctor that evening as it cleared up quite quickly on its own sans antibacterial intervention. That doesn't mean that we weren't awake with a screaming child for a lot of Friday night - but we would've been that anyway.. even antibiotics don't work that quickly.

Being tired from the ups and downs of the night before meant that Saturday was very low key and our date night was really placid. We went to grab a drink before the movie at our local watering hole and I couldn't even get in 'the bubble'. I was just too tired. Well, either that or my brain still shudders at the thought of alcohol after living through the famed monster hangover back in December. We'll never know.

LIfe is just ticking right along - I can't believe today is the last day of January and that Mary Catherine's half term is just a week away. Yes, this is a shorter term than the last, but still! Whoosh - next thing you know it'll be April and we'll be back on an airplane headed to Atlanta once again.

I'm so stoked, we've just decided that we're going to Myrtle Beach for a decent portion of that trip with my parents and I'm already so stressed out at work that the thought of a few days on the beach with not much to do just sounds heavenly. The fact that our resort has a Starbucks onsite also thrills me to no end. Hey, if you can't enjoy your addiction on holiday - then when?

Just in from our date night. Andrew and I were both tired from being up for various parts of last night with Mary Catherine as her ear infection took hold. However, we managed to drag ourselves out to the movies and I'm so glad we did! We saw Venus and really enjoyed it. Peter O'Toole plays an aging actor coming to terms with approaching the end of his life who strikes up an interesting relationship with his best friend's niece. He certainly deserves the Oscar nomination for Best Actor he's received (his 8th nomination, but has never won).

I'm so stoked - Andrew just booked our tickets to see the Scissor Sisters at the O2 in July! Andrew was looking at The O2 website and happened to see that they were playing. We even got decent seats. It's all very exciting. The new O2 complex looks like it's going to be fabulous - it's nice to see the Dome being used for something.

Do we have a babysitter lined up? No - but we have until late July to sort that out. Mary Catherine will be so gutted that she can't go - she's their biggest (smallest?) fan. Seriously. I am going to start saving now to be able to buy her a concert t-shirt! Heck, I had to wait until 15 to get mine (ZZ Top, Afterburner tour, in case you were wondering). (note - I just looked up the image for that tee on ebay and it's listed as VINTAGE. Kill. Me. Now.

In other news, when I picked Mary Catherine up from school today she was complaining of an ear ache. Bless her - by the time we got home she was really upset and it was obvious that her ear was really bothering her. A big dose of ibuprofen, some warm milk and a little internet research on ear infections and we're doing a-o-k now. I'll keep her home from swimming tomorrow, but I'm pleased to read that ear infections no longer mean running to the doctor for antibiotics. (I believe in antibiotics for confirmed bacterial (not viral) infections only. I'd hate to need them one day and be immune to them.) I expect we'll be up in the night for another dose, but thankfully she's happy to take ibuprofen (she likes the orange taste - isn't a big fan of paracetemol/tylenol strawberry, go figure).

Tagged
I got tagged by HollyMay.

Now I have to: open the nearest book to page 123, type 6 - 8 lines of the book and tag three other people (Nancy, Katherine and Jodi - consider thyselves tagged). Now, back to the task at hand.

"Great, time to go to the beach before he gets here."
"I don't want to."
"You don't want to go to the beach?"
"No, these are my holidays too. I do not want to work so hard every day. Not on cycling, anyway." She flicked a pair of lacy panties at my leg. Well, 'pair' was a grand description for such a tiny piece of clothing. A pantie singular was more like it.
"If you let me get you a decent bike, it wouldn't be like work at all."
"I don't want to do anything this morning. I just want to lie in the courtyard, read, do nothing."
I mulled this over while she chose a t-shirt and another sarong and laid them out on the bed, ready to put on after her shower. Just lying about all day struck me as a waste of a good beach, especially as we were going to be marooned in Paris for several months once the cafe was up and running. If it ever was.

Oh what glee - I've just gotten to write the word panties on my site! Always fun. Above from Merde Actually by Stephen Clarke. A fantastic comedy of errors.
From Amazon: From the bestselling author of A YEAR IN THE MERDE, the next instalment in the hilarious adventures of Paul West.

A year after arriving in France, Englishman Paul West is still struggling with some fundamental questions: What is the best way to scare a gendarme? Why are there no health warnings on French nudist beaches? And is it really polite to sleep with your boss' mistress? Paul opens his English tea room, and mutates (temporarily) into a Parisian waiter; samples the pleasures of typically French hotel-room afternoons; and, on a return visit to the UK, sees the full horror of a British office party through Parisian eyes. Meanwhile, he continues his search for the perfect French mademoiselle. But will Paul find l'amour eternel, or will it all end in merde? In his second comedy of errors, Paul West continues to sabotage the entente cordiale. Author's apology: "I'd just like to say sorry to all the suppository fans out there, because in this book there are no suppositories. There are, however, lots of courgettes, and I see this as progress. Suppositories to courgettes - I think it proves that I'm developing as a writer." Stephen Clarke.

No more snow, I'm afraid. It was all gone and nice and a sunny and balmy 4 degrees by 2pm. Oh well, a girl can dream. As I was about to leave work to go get Mary Catherine, I realised that I'd totally forgotten my keys. Coldest day of the year and I was without a car or house key. Nice one.

Thankfully Andrew came to our rescue. MC and I headed to Cafe Rouge in the village - where we love to go anyway - until Andrew got to us. A lovely dinner later and we were on our way. Not a bad end to what could've been a crisis.

Lots of new pictures on Flickr as I finally found the cable to download my camera. A few from our snow hours this morning, including one very bundled Mary Catherine!

Well, well, well - it's actually snowed in London! When we woke up this morning and peeked outside it was gloriously white. Mary Catherine woke up soon after and was thrilled when she saw it all. This will be the first snow since she was two months old, so certainly the first that she thinks she's ever seen. She wanted to go out immediately and play. We managed to hold her off until we went to get in the car.

The Atlantian in me wasn't too keen to come to work this morning. Snow where I come from means going to the grocery store, if you're brave, to stock up on toilet paper and milk. Not getting in your car, all business as usual. It looks lovely, but is certainly lacking the joy I remember when I was a child of a true 'snow day'.

Heck, I even listened to the news and looked online for school closures. Uh - yeah. Not a jot mentioned! We're supposed to get more this afternoon and I gotta tell you, this Southerner will be out th'door at the first sign of more than 100+ flakes!

Lately, I've been so stressed at work (nothing major, just really busy) and our home life has been relatively hum-drum - I have to admit that I'm finding it difficult to post all the time. I'll soldier on, but if things seem a bit lacking - well, now you know why.

Actually - here's what's currently going through my head on repeat.. My dad has pneumonia and I worry about him. I'm really busy at work and feel like I have too much on my plate, but I don't really see how I can lessen my load without either a.) ending up with not enough or b.) looking like I'm complaining. My daughter is going through a weird thing where she's refusing to poo on the toilet because she did a poo like, three months ago that hurt and now she equates the big porcelan god with pain. Thankfully, she's no longer holding it in - she's just going in her pants because, as she told me last night, 'it's faster and easier'. I worry that Andrew doesn't do enough around the house and that I have to do everything - right down to the very last detail like deciding what food we will eat and what television show we will watch after Mary Catherine is in bed.

Now, take all of the above - multiply by 10 because I have PMT/PMS and put on continual repeat and finally add one more worry on top that I'm worrying too much. Crank that sucker up to 11 and bang. There you go - that's me at the moment.

You can either process the above and give me advice (and yes, I think Prozac may just be in order) or you can just look at the pretty flowers I drew yesterday. You decide. Me - I'm just going to slink back under my desk now.

This Saturday we went to the Hockney exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Our friends Katherine and Jason joined us for a lovely day out. We were lucky to score tickets as they were sold out for this, the last, weekend. Nothing like having friends in the right places, I say. Seriously, we were very lucky to get in and although it was incredibly crowded, I really enjoyed it. Mary Catherine was like a cloudy day with high winds. She eased in and out of good and grumpy moods, but for the most part enjoyed it as well.

I'd bought her a new faux Moleskine sketchbook (like my new little Moleskine, but slightly larger) for the trip - so she was keen to use it to sketch while we were there. Mostly, she had me draw what I saw so she could colour it in - so she has a few pages of hastily drawn Hockney's! You should click on the link to K's blog above and read all about the woman she met at the museum - very quirky.

I get such a buzz from exposing her to culture. Seriously, it's one of my greatest pleasures. Well, that and the fact that my four year old daughter is acutely aware of the role coffee shops play in our urban life. When we were in America a few weeks ago, we walked out of a shop and she turned to me and said, 'Mummy, I really need a coffee, let's go get a mocha!' The apple does not fall far, my village, not far at all.

Newly Found
Fun parenting sites:
Babble ("A magazine and community for the new urban parent")
ParentHacks ("Daily parenting tips and ideas from the real experts -- actual parents.")

And have a look at this! Petunia Picklebottom - baby chic. I don't plan to have another, but if I did - I'd definitely have to have the Blueberry Crumb Cake Society Satchel. Most definitely.

You know what's weird? Now that Mary Catherine is four and in school (albeit her Nursery year), we're totally moving out of the whole Chic Parenting website world, from what I can tell. (Babble above, while fabulous, sort of stops at toddler .. We're not a toddler anymore, that's for sure.)

Hmm.. Surely there have to be websites that will placate my daily parenting website reading needs? Anyone have any suggestions? I know Kidley - but am at a loss for others..

I left work four minutes early... got on the DLR and kabam! Someone pulled the passenger alarm. So we went to the next station and had to get off the train and wait for the next. Finally got where I was going and had to take a taxi to MC's school as the overland trains were severely delayed. I was late picking her up - but it was fine. We hung out in lots of traffic and made it home about 35 minutes behind normal schedule.

The neighbour in front of us lost a big evergreen tree during the day, which was right near our parking space. Uh - I parked way over out of the way of the other tree just in case!

MC's in bed and I'm watching an old Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. Boy George is on - he paints out his double chin! He's so shaded under his chin (I don't think he's trying to do it on the sly, this is Boy George we're talking about) it's amazing. I am going to start doing that!

I think this is the first time since I've lived in the UK that I've ever seen the Brits bristle at bad weather. A load of people have left work early as trains and motorways are in a bit of chaos. I suppose in Atlanta, it's snow that freaks us out - here, today, it seems to be wind. I work on the 17th floor of a big glass building and we've been vibrating all afternoon thanks to the gale force winds. The winds have been picking up water from the docks and dumping it in various places and on various people - so that's been entertaining.

So far, I remain unaffected - but then again I'm one of the (possible stupid) people still left in the office. So who knows how my evening commute will be... More via BBC.com

Okay - let's get geeky. I've seen some gadgets recently that I think are 'want-worthy'.. Check out the 'iCache' - a mini storage for all your credit/cash cards. The package consists of the iCache and a “universal card.” And here’s what you do – once you buy the device, register all your cards to your online account. Then, insert the universal card into the device to complete the setup. Each time you want to use a particular card, say at a mall, choose the required card on the iCache’s screen and the iCache’s universal card is temporarily loaded with the data from the card you have chosen. In other words, the universal card becomes the card you are planning to use. You can then use the card for your shopping, and the data loaded on it disappears after 10 minutes.

The security aspects have been taken care of as well – the data is encrypted and the device itself can be activated only when you scan your fingerprint on the iCache’s biometric strip. The company is currently trying to get banks and credit card companies interested in the idea. No information yet on pricing or when the actual device will be out in the market. It would cut down on wallet clutter, that's for sure. Via Popgadget

How about colour therapy while using a keyboard? Luxeed's latest lets you program each individual key with one of 512 colors, "be it a single hue, a spectrum rainbow." Users can even download color skins / patterns directly from the firm's website, or you can save your own design for future reference, and actual brightness levels can also be adjusted right alone with tone. Moreover, users can make the keys light up and dim based on the beat of the music surrounding it. I kinda want one. Via Engadget.

As you can see - the sketchbook journal is coming along nicely. Andrew watched something geeky on telly last night, so I finished up yesterday's drawing. My arm still hurts today from all the tiny dots, but it's not art unless you suffer, right?

Not much else of note, really. Work has been mega-hectic (like I actually forgot to eat yesterday, which is funny because I'm one of those people who makes fun of people who forget to eat.. who forgets to eat? Uh, that'd be me.) since we've been back. The weather currently leaves a lot to be desired and Mary Catherine has been pretty good - so no complaints there.

Today we did..... absolutely nothing. Which almost rivals what we did yesterday, which was next to nothing. It's been a lovely weekend, very relaxed. We skipped Mary Catherine's swimming lesson and slept in until about 10:30 yesterday morning. I think that was the last of our jet lag fun. We managed to get out of the house for an early, early dinner at the Wharf before coming home and putting MC to bed before having movie night. Matchstick Men - very good.

Today we did even less - Andrew made a pot of chili for another late lunch and we just hung out at home, did some laundry (aren't you envious yet?) and watched far too much children's television.

Mary Catherine and I played with Andrew's new computer some more - the picture at left is the result of our fun. I took the pic - she did the rest . It was cool to see her use the track pad on the Mac Book Pro - I didn't know she could do that.

Ahh - Monday looms large.

Andrew got a new Mac Book Pro this past week. Before you wonder where we keep the money tree, I should tell you that it's for work, but thankfully he gets to treat it as his own. It came with a fun program called Comic Life and I spent a few minutes last night playing around. Hence the lovely picture of me in my glasses at the right.

We all slept until 10:30 this morning - all of us - so we're just having a home day today. I have a feeling I'll be feeling a little stir crazy later on this evening, but it's no big whoop. So far, I've gotten all of Mary Catherine's stuff unpacked and put away - which is a good thing. Her room looks a bit full now, so I feel a toy cleanout and drop off to the Children's A&E later this month.

Now I just have to put away all of our clothes and pack away the Christmas tree. I think the tree will disappear this evening after MC goes to bed. You know, the Christmas Elves have to come and take it back to the north pole. The north pole being a cardboard box!

Being a lover of minute details - I decided on scarves as my topic for today. I'm not finished with the page yet, by any means - but it's been fun taking a few moments here and again to doodle a bit.

You're welcome to critique my drawing - but keep in mind 'I'm an artist and I'm sensitive about my shit.' (Actually, that line isn't true, but for my friend Nan who is having a difficult day today - call Tyrone girl, I'm thinking of you).

Happy Friday.

Guess who slept from 7 until 10 and is now up and going strong? Yep, Miss Jet Lag 2007 is on the loose again! It's 2:46am and I'm wide awake, Mary Catherine is wide awake and lucky Andrew is sound asleep. I'm hoping that we'll be able to try and lie down again after this episode of Peppa Pig goes off. Although, it's not looking so good.

Serves me right for thinking we had kicked a little 'Lag Ass', so to speak. It seems to be worse than ever. 6:30 is heading my way ever so quickly. Thankfully, tomorrow (actually, I suppose I mean today) is Friday and Starbucks is close by my office.

I decided not to make any resolutions this year. However, I think I'm going to do 43 things. From their site:

“I am doing 43 things”
People have known for years that making a list of goals is the best way to achieve them. But most of us never get around to making a list. 43 Things is great for that! Make a list on 43 Things and see what changes happen in your life. Best of all it’s a way of connecting with other enthusiasts interested in everything from watching a space shuttle launch to grow my own vegetables. So the next time someone asks you, “what do you do?” you can answer with confidence, “I am doing 43 things!”.

Now - what to put on my list? One thing I know I will put on is my new Sketchbook Journal. Andrew bought me a Moleskine book and new drawing pens for Christmas and I really want to see if I can keep a sketchbook for a year. So that's definitely going on my list. I did my first drawing today and it's such a gorgeous book that I was nervous doodling in it!

Good news - we've had a jet lag breakthrough. After a full day at school yesterday, she fell asleep in the car around 6pm and she, literally, was not capable of waking up until 7 this morning. I actually tried to wake her to get her to the loo, but she would just cry any time we moved her.

Of course, what did Andrew and I do last night to celebrate our sleeping child? We stayed up until 1am watching television. Make that one jet lag breakthrough, two silly adults still not coping.

Nothing much to report, really. We're slowly unpacking our bags. I'd like to tell you that we're really great and super efficient - but until we take time this weekend, it's our usual 'seek and ye shall find' method of unpacking. Not ideal, trust me.

Speaking of the weekend - I have not one idea what we should spend ours doing!

10 January 2007
It's 2:15 in the morning. Mary Catherine went to bed around 8pm only to wake up at 10pm. She's been up ever since. Damn jet lag. We're having to really use a lot of patience with her, as she doesn't really understand why it's so late at night but she feels so very wide awake. Andrew and I are taking it in turns to each get an hour of sleep at a time. The crap thing is that all three of us have to be up at 6:30 - a mere four hours from now - and have a full day ahead of us.

I know that we won't do ourselves any favours if we take the day off (not that it's a possibility) to sleep and get back to normal. It's a painful, but necessary procedure to get back on Greenwich Mean Time. Still sucks though.

Oh, and want has a new name... Check out the iPhone. When you look at all they say it will do - man, it looks amazing. Although - my current Pocket PC does the same stuff for the most part ... as with all Apple things, well, it just doesn't look as sexy and delicious as the new iPhone. There's a lot to be said for a sleek, posh user interface, huh?

Okay - it's now 2:36am and I'm rambling about sexy user interfaces. I've just given Mary Catherine some food - Rice Krispies, because we haven't stocked the cupboard yet - so hopefully she will listen to her full tummy and get a bit sleepy. Actually - that's a good thought. Bless the internet - I'm going to do my grocery shopping now. Excellent idea, self! Seriously, how cool is it that I can order groceries at 2:39 in the morning for delivery later today?

Throw another litre of milk in the cart - I'm on a roll!!

Thanks to a nifty little tail wind, our flight back was... well, see picture at left for visual description. I either have major motion sickness that's still with me, or a touch of a stomach bug. I couldn't eat on the plane last night and still feel really queasy.

Since the flight was really turbulent, I thought it was my body's reaction to the horrible ups and downs, but since I still feel badly, I'm guessing it's the latter. Of course, the fact that I haven't had anything in my stomach for 24 hours probably isn't helping. Let's just call it the transatlantic diet - it'll be all the rage.

The good news is that we're back in three pieces and seem to be doing pretty well. Mary Catherine and I had a big nap when we got home, which really helped, since she only had about two hours of sleep on the plane and Andrew and I had about 30 minutes each. Andrew probably could have had more, but I kept grabbing him for emotional support as we barrelled through the sky.

This afternoon I took Mary Catherine to a birthday party for one of her classmates. Unfortunately, Andrew had taken the car in for its annual service, since we were effectively off today - so I had no easy method of transportation there. One taxi, one bus and two trains later we're back. I must admit it was annoying, but I feel like I've truly been thrown back into my life here. No relaxing for me - just hoards of strangers on a commuter train. Welcome back.

08 January 2007
Okay, get this. It's all packed and we stayed within our four bag, self-imposed, limit. Wait a minute, we must not have shopped enough! I took Mary Catherine to kindergarten at Mom's school this morning and snuck off to Target for one final run through. Two outfits for Mary Catherine, a PS3 game and a present for friends who have a new baby (congrats Hasnain and Benazir!), I was all finished. Not shopped out, mind you, just didn't see anything else to purchase.

Andrew's just brought all the bags downstairs and not only are there only four of them, they're not even packed to the max like they normally are! What's wrong with us?! I suppose we'll chalk it up to quality, not quantity.

Mary Catherine is ever so fragile at the moment (so is my mother, but that's a different story). So we're really trying to keep her calm and occupied (thank you Disney Channel) until it's time to go. I know she will cry all the way to the airport (ditto for my mom) and then absolutely fall apart when it's time to separate from my parents. So far today she's renounced country, school and parents. Go figure.

I feel so badly for her.

Ask me if we've started packing yet to go home.. Go on, I'l wait. Uh, the answer is no. Not one bit. We do hope to get to it at some point today, but we're having a good time sitting around, not doing very much. Mom made Andrew's favourite meal (meatloaf and mashed potatoes) and my favourite dessert (brownies).

We've been discussing the possibility of Mary Catherine staying with my parents for part of her summer break later this year. Now I have to do a gut check and ask myself (and consult Andrew, of course) if I could live without my daughter for three or four weeks in another country. Part of me says yes, part of me starts to ache. I'd like to think that it's something that we'll definitely be able to consider later this year. Interesting that she's old enough for us to think about stuff like that. She would have a blast being here for a while - she could ride her big wheel every day!

I've just switched over to the new Blogger today. So if the site goes haywire, that's why.

We went to Lenox Mall today and I tied one on at the Kiehl's store. Oh it felt good! I've never used a product of theirs that I didn't just adore. It's so different from, say, Bath and Body Works in that it's mostly all unscented and the packaging isn't cutsie - it's just good, extremely functional lotions and potions. Yes, it's expensive - but you get the feeling that they put the money in ingredients, not marketing. The fact that it's posh stuff doesn't put me off either, mind you!

Hmm.. what else to share about our trip to America... My curly haired daughter has recently discovered the joys of brushing her hair. This used to be a major daily battle, but thanks to a Mason & Pearson boar bristle and nylon brush, she's aok with it. Thank goodness!!

We fly back to the UK on Monday. So tomorrow is our last full day here. I know it's going to be hard for everyone for us to separate. Insert my usual feelings of guilt here. Andrew and I are planning on packing most everything tomorrow. I think my mom and dad are really going to miss Shmi, our Nabaztag! He's been plugged in and chatting away for two weeks now - such good fun! I keep telling Mom she needs one too... see, I'm just spreading the nerdy love.

04 January 2007
I'm visiting here at Mom's school and have just had an interesting discussion (with no children around, of course) centered around one main topic that is quite a hot button for me. The Gays. One person my mom works with believes that homosexuality is wrong and while I know, sadly, that is a widely held belief I just couldn't sit and listen to her spew her views without getting in on the action and presenting an alternative perspective.

Specifically - we spoke about children being taught by a gay teacher. I, for one, would be thrilled if my child, male or female, were taught by a gay teacher as I want them to be exposed to as much diversity as possible. As parents we are responsible for teaching our children values - and while I know I'm incredibly liberal - I also think that bottom line is for everyone to love everyone. The presence of gays, and/or anyone different from 'normal' (which is of course a relative term) in our society - well, let's just say they're not going away or going to dwindle in numbers. To teach our children that they're wrong and bad is just teaching them to be narrow-minded and hateful. Why would you encourage your children to hate?

Mary Catherine is already aware that some people have a mommy and a daddy, some have one parent, some have two moms or two dads. It's just not a big deal. I want her to be around people in loving relationships, regardless of sexual orientation.

So there - put that on your soapbox and smoke it. (sorry mom if I offended you by speaking my mind)

Mary Catherine geeked out a little bit too and got a new game for her Leapster - which she is continuing to enjoy. Have mercy - we're so dorky I may just pass out.

Blinging Ride

mc's new ride

We have a new car in our family. It's a Barbie Big Wheel. All lovely, pink and when she puts her mind to it, fast. It's just toy central here at Nana and Grumpa's house. (thanks to Nan for the picture)

We're all very attached to our Nabaztag/tag which we've named Shmi. You can go here to send my rabbit (and me) a message. Address it to Shmi - you can choose something pre-recorded (which are all pretty funny), an mp3 (send us a new song!) or just type something for Shmi to read. Eventually, I think I'll be able to put a button on my site where you'll be able to send us messages whenever you like. Man, I love technology.

We've been enjoying watching Shmi do tai chi and tell us the time on the hour. He also talks to us with random messages when he feels like it. Nerdy, nerdy.

Okay - we're off to Cracker Barrel for dinner. Nothing like a side of biscuits with a little controversy!
